I posted this right before I left. The info is very old and out-dated. Scoot 66 is going to last longer than 66 days and I’m very very thrilled by that. I wasn’t sure if it would even last 40 days. But thanks to some great people who I wanted to hang out with for longer periods of time, Scoot 66 is lasting quite a bit longer.

There’s a good chance that it will last into the end of September.

Scoot 66 is a 66 day trek across 25 states, focusing on Route 66 on the way out and the northern states on the way back. It starts on April 30 and ends around July 4. Both the start and stop points are in Lewisburg, PA.

The trip is divided into two legs. The first one, on Route 66, from Chicago to LA is a little over 4,500 miles long. It’s divided into thirty days. I tried to keep each day around 125 – 175 miles. There’s a lot to see out there, I want to make sure I see as much as I can.

The second leg, appropriately titled “the return trip,” involves quite a bit more riding, upwards of 300 miles on some days.

One of the biggest challenges is figuring out when to stop. There are only two reasons to schedule a day off. The first is laundry. I suppose I could do laundry before leaving in the morning, so it’s not a huge big deal. I’ll have to do laundry four or five times on the road.

The other reason is maintenance. The rear tire needs to be changed every 3,000 or so miles, the front every 6,000 – 9,000 (depending on a lot of things). The oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles. The belt (for the transmission) needs to be changed every 6,000. I’ve got to figure out where to do both of these things. The best bet is to just take it to a scooter shop. They may feel sorry for me and do it for cheap.

After this trip is over, I will have visited all 48 continental states in just over a decade.
