The picture of Truxton brought me back home. I lived in Truxton in the early 70’s and my parents worked at the gas station/cafe on your photo. We lived in a studio attached to the cafe. Great place for a boy to grow up. The school there had 2 rooms but we only used 1. We had 17 students from 1st to 5th grade and 1 teacher taught us all. No football, baseball, soccer, basketball, bike riding, skateboarding. Before I-40 went through the place was alive from people heading to California.

Something needs to be done, that’s for sure. I’ll check into the waterproofer and the duct tape is a good idea. Maybe some velcro straps too.

You’re right about the experience. But what is a bummer is that I wasn’t even on *old* 66 when it happened. I was as an exit. 66 originally went straight through the interchange - the frontage road sort of loops up and around. You know what I’m talking about. It’s sort of a bummer. I’ll have to try it again on a stretch of old road. Maybe I could ditch it on several different alignments.

The mid west LOVES their murals. It’s the only way they can make their (I don’t want to say “crappy” because they’re not all crappy) towns look like they used to. You know, back in the good old days that were so amazing (ignoring the fact that it was those same good old days that led them to where they are now.

I was really tempted to try it. I’m not really sure how it works. Does it spray *out* at you? Like a cologne squirt gun? That’s just nasty. They warn you not to smoke around it because it could catch fire. Now *that* would be fun. Technically, you could make it squirt fire.

This trip has involved so many lost opportunities.

One word. . . its a compound word. . . GORE-TEX. . . .

They might have a waterproofer for your boots at some hardware/farm store. . . it might be for canvas. . .but it could be worth a try. . . for your rain gear. . . maybe a plastic bag/duck tape around the wrist to your gloves. . .

You did indeed live to tell about it.
