For the 2010 Christmas Mix, I’ve decided to dip into my late middle school/early high school past and picked out 44 songs that I remember from before I could drive. All of the songs featured on the mix have been recorded from vinyl records in my own personal collection. I’ve had many of these records since the late 80s, early 90s. Over the advent season, I’ll be featuring one per day, counting down to Christmas party timewhen the mix itself will be released.
I’ve mentioned before that I was into mid-80s rap. Run-DMC, Whodini, UTFO – that stuff. But by the time Urban Dance Squad, I had mostly moved on (as you’ve seen). Sometimes this is billed as a cover of Ray Barretto’s song of the same name. I’ve never heard that song, so I don’t know.
Urban Dance Squad was a Dutch rap/jam band, which is odd because you don’t really think of rap or jam bands when you mention the Dutch.
I can’t remember if I saw the video on Yo MTV Raps or 120 Minutes, but it was probably Yo MTV Raps. I dug the skating in it even though I could never skate. I hung out with a lot of skaters, but just never picked it up. I picked up their music and their girls. Actually, just their music. The girls would come later. I don’t think skaters really had girlfriends.
I also don’t think skaters like Urban Dance Squad. We (they?) were more into Dead Kennedys and Agent Orange. So was I, but I also liked Urban Dance Squad. I was probably the only one.
How about you stop listening to me and start listening to Deeper Shade of Soul?

Wow, UDS… This brings back memories!
