The two seven-inches of Admiral

Wormleysburg is that town that’s sort of just north of Camp Hill, right across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, PA. I’ve driven through it a bunch of times. The first punk show I ever went to was in… well, that was in Lemoyne, which is kind of near Wormleysburg. Anyway, I don’t have much to say about that strangely-named town, except that one amazing band called it home.

Admiral - 1st 7" Admiral - 2nd 7"

Admiral put out two seven inches in 1990 and 1991, taking the DC emocore and making it their own. Admiral was from Wormleysburg.

Their first release was recorded in March of 1990 at Inner Ear Recording Studios in Arlington, Virginia. Fugazi, Rites of Spring, Minor Threat and Q & Not U all recorded there. It was released on Soul Force Records. It’s a great 7″, but I heard their second one first.

AdmiralWhen I first heard Admiral’s 7″ put out by Ebullition Records I was completely blown away. I can’t even remember how or when I heard it, but it must have been in the mid-90s. I probably just ordered a bunch of records from Ebullition and this was one of them.

After a few listens, I was at once elated that I had found them and bummed that there wasn’t more. At that time, I didn’t know of their first 7″ or of their song on the Significant Records Beneath the Wheel compilation (which I still don’t have).

Most folks reading this probably have never heard of Admiral. And maybe they’re an acquired taste. But give it a try, it’s probably not like much you’ve ever heard before.

And if you have heard of them, well, hopefully you’ll appreciate having both 7″s on high quality mp3s, lovingly ripped from vinyl. The zip file has all of the songs plus the 7″ covers and inserts.

Admiral’s vocalist, Sean Linwood, later sang for the freaking brilliantly amazing Navio Forge (you must here this). Guitarist, Joseph McCredmund played in Hoover and Crown Hate Ruin.

  1. What a great band to be your first, Eric! Thanks for your efforts, my only lil nitpick would be that some of the tags are wrong (album titles) or missing (genre, year), and the album art was not “embedded” (i.e. doesn’t show on CoverFlow in iTunes or iPods).

Actually, after listening – you did not upload “Fit” from the second EP! You merely uploaded the first track, Revolving and Loading, twice. It affects both the .zip upload and the integrated player in the page above.

I do actually own the Beneath The Wheel comp, although I have no way to rip it. i found a crappy 128 kbps rip of it, and also a live ten song set from the Sacred Heart Church circa ’91 (from some shady Russian site). i will listen to those & make sure they’re OK.

Eventually, I’ll tie all of those elements into an Admiral Discography, ghetto-style….but i would prefer to have your lovingly ripped version of Fit included in it. Ideally, the compilation track (“Comes From Nowhere”) would be a nice high bitrate version, too.

Let’s keep the ball rolling, as it seems that Ebullition won’t. =(

    • Hey Paul,

Thanks for the props. The big problem, as you mentioned, is that I seem to have forgotten a song. This is not good. Hopefully, I won’t have to rerip it. I’ll get this fixed up tonight (or find out that it’ll take a bit longer).

As for the tags, I prefer to keep tags to a minimum. I don’t like Genre tags or embedding the album art. It’s just a preference, of course.

It would be nice if Eb at least offered the Admiral discography as a download. If I could get the comp, I’d do it. But until then, I’ve got (most of) both 7″s.

“Fit” will be up shortly. I can’t believe I did that. Thanks for giving me a head’s up.

      -Eric

  2. Aww, sorry Eric. That’s too bad on the re-rip. =(

i will ask around a bit and see if one of my vinyl-loving pals is savvy enough to rip them. To be honest, i think many vinyl heads simply aren’t interested in MP3′s or portability.

If i can get a nice rip on the comp, i have made a note of your site and will send ya a shout.

    Cheers,

    Paul

    • Ok, it’s all fixed. Didn’t take too long.

It’s true, most of us into vinyl aren’t into mp3s. I’m like that. But I’d like folks to hear this stuff, and this is really the only way at this point.

      Woo!

  3. Very cool, Eric….well, i struck out, so this’ll have to do til i rip that Beneath The Wheel comp…

  4. shoot track 13 got corrupted…..normally i use RARs, will post a separate zip of track 13 tomorrow

  5. Nice one. I still got the ‘Brother can u..’ 7″. The other went walkabout years ago. so glad to have these again. My 1200′s are packed away so the ‘Brother’ 7″ hasn’t gone on for a while.

I thought these were much better than Moss Icon. chuck these on my own blog if thats alright with you? (i’ll give u full credit and a link).

    cheers,

i got a big smile listening to these

  6. I am Sean’s wife. Where did you get the rights to download his music on the internet?

    • What do you mean? These things are loooong out of print. They were in my collection and just figured that people who enjoyed the music would like to hear it again.

If the band wants me to take them down, I guess I can, though I think it would be a great shame.
