I *heart* Popcorn and so do you!

When I first moved to Seattle, I discovered that “healthy” junk food was all around me. There was Mighty O’s, of course, but there were also stores that sold Red Hot Blues chips and vegan ice cream! I had isles of organic nachoes seasoned with sea salt! Corn syrup? Heck no! None of that here, just good old fashioned SUGAR! Mmmmmm!

Getting low on popcorn...We were stuffing ourselves on this veganny goodness! But I noticed that as my wasteline grew, my wallet inevitably shrank. My cupboard were full (well, at least till I skarfed it down) but my bank account was noticably shrinking.

Dining out wasn’t never something I was into and even though there are tons of amazing places in Seattle, I’d usually just rather make something myself. I love to cook, as many of you know. But when it came to snacking, I was all like “gimme them chips!”

That is, until I discovered… popcorn.

Yeah, as a kid, my mom would make popcorn and we’d all lay in front of the console TV watching Webster and Mr. Belvedere. But that was then! That was before I moved to Seattle and discoverd Veggie Bootie and Tings!

Popcorn had its place, to be sure. It was for the movies. Pay $9 for a movie and $6 for a bucket of popcorn that you’d eat during the previews.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm!Lately, however, I’ve rediscovered the glories of good old, old fashioned, hand made popcorn. Heck, I don’t even have a popcorn popper – just make it in a big pot!

And my goodness it’s cheap. Like really cheap. Compared to the $5 I’d pay for a half-full bag of Kettle Organic Potato Chips Sea Salt & Black Pepper, it’s a steal! For $5, I could be in popcorn for weeks! Even the organic stuff (if you buy it in bulk) is cheap!

Some folks like to put nutritional yeast on their popcorn. That’s all well and good, I suppose. But me, I just like it plain with a bit of salt, just like Mom used to make!

These days, Mom’s 3,000 miles away. The Dukes of Hazzard and Benson have been replaced with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Godzilla, but the popcorn remains the same.

Thanks, Mom!

What you really need is to merge Dukes of Hazzard and Godzilla. Have Waylon Jennings do the voice over for Godzilla.

“About that time, ole Barugon found his way over to Nagoya Castle. Maybe Godzilla should chase him down, maybe not, but either way… not looking good for Nagoya Castle.”

Or maybe have the scientists and military guys all drive 69 Chargers? I’d watch it.

Eric, I hate using the microwave and other popcorn-making gadgets, so I’m going to drill you on how you make yours in a pot. If I remember correctly, do you shake the pot over high heat? (with the lid on, of course, right?) How much and what kind of oil do you use?

    Thanks, prabhu…

I put some oil in a pot – enough to cover the bottom, throw in four or five kernals and turn the heat to 4.5 and then put a lid on it. Wait till two or three pop and put in the rest (we use about 3/4 cup for two people – but we eat a LOT of popcorn). Then turn the heat down to 4 (I don’t know if this is essential). Shake it up so the oil gets on the kernals (you don’t need a LOT of oil, but if you don’t use enough, the won’t pop correctly). As it’s popping, shake it a bit here and there. Not a lot.

The last time I made it I had only two or three unpopped kernals (called “old maids”).

I have Cornelius, it’s a popcorn popper, it blows hot air and makes fat free, perfect, popcurn every time. I like it. It pops the corn right into your bowl.

Hey your recipe I used is a atar attraction in the Krishna.com newsletter this month.

We’re looking into a hot air popper. Found a pink Hello Kitty one! :) But will probably end up with another brand (same idea… less pink).

What does “star attraction” mean? I noticed that I was getting a lot more traffic from krishna.com – that’s a good thing (well… maybe not for the visitors… hehe). Maybe I should have had you link to the Gita Page or to the ISKCON Music page. Hm..

I guess star attraction is just hyperbole : ) There is a html newsletter every month and for this month it has one of your photos some of your text and a link to the Food Channel where your recipe is with a link to your site. There are four or five other items on it but I thought your was the star and it was very atttactive. Tell me if you want me to change the link. Pink is OK, so is Hello Kitty.

Nah, the link is fine. And i’m getting quite a bit of traffic from krishna.com lately. More than I have been in the past couple of weeks. Figured something was up!
