Good-bye to Ubuntu? Well, sort of…

I really, really like Ubuntu Linux. I thought their last stable version, Hardy Heron, was perfect. And the newest, Intrepid Ibex, should be even better, right?

Well, no. Since upgrading to Ibex, I’ve had nothing but problems. Especially with Firefox and audio and flash. I’ve tried fixes and work arounds, but yesterday I became fed up to the point where I decided to leave Ubuntu. Maybe for good.

It is my screenshot, ok?So what did I do? Did I venture back to Windows with my geeky little tail between my legs? Heck no! I have moved onto another version of Linux.

Enter: Linux Mint.

Linux Mint is based upon Ubuntu. It’s like Ubuntu, but made pretty and quite a bit more stable. The version of Mint that I’m using (Elyssa) was built from Ubuntu Hardy Heron, which was quite stable. I could have just gone back to Ubuntu Hardy, but I figured that since I was going to have to do a fresh install, why not try something different?

And I really, really like it.

I’ve played around and tweaked it a bit and wow, it’s quite lovely.

If you’re thinking about switching to Linux, I do still strongly suggest Ubuntu Hardy Heron. But if you want something a little more elegant, give Linux Mint a try, ok?

Well, maybe Ibex is working for you, if so then great. But I’m betting if it’s not, Hardy would work just fine. I really really like mint. It’s sleek and sexy. And sexy is very important in an operating system.

I agree. I also started with Ubuntu but gave Mint a shot. I haven’t looked back since. Having all of the codecs pre-installed and little enhancements like the menu or control panel make it a pleasure to use.

I was utterly shocked with how bad Ibex was getting. Hardy was great. Very stable. And if it weren’t for my curiosity over what Linux Mint was, I’d have switched back. But I’m glad I found the Mint. The menu and control panel are both great. But the codecs being pre-installed definitely wins me over.

Thanks for the heads up on Mr. Minty. I installed it this morning and yes, it seems very stable and user friendly. So far, I am liking very much. Not so keen on the green theme but that can easily be changed. I really like the fact that it comes with a pdf manual, even if not very detailed. One nice thing about Ubuntu is the ability to install within windows, not duel boot on separate partitions. That’s how Rati is using it and it makes it all very easy and painless. We’re (or rather I am) going to reformat her laptop at some point and do a full install then. But at the moment, if anything comes up that is problematic with Ubuntu, she can easily switch to Windows. This feature makes trying Linux for the first time a lot less daunting and I’ve been passing out Ubuntu Cd’s to anyone showing the slightest interest. Still, if all goes well at the Mint, I think it will soon be the new OS for Rati.

No problem at all. I wish I could play around with it more, but the lappy is in the shoppy.

We were in Best Buy today and walked past a Windows Vista/Office, etc display. The prices are freaking outrageous. It’s comforting to know that I can do pretty much all of that for free and legally (mostly). Very nifty.

Just when I thought I had a slight chance of reeling my darling hubby back in a little bit from his love affair with ubuntu, along comes mint. And if mint is even sexier than ubuntu, I don’t stand a chance. heehee! So now, not only do I have to compete with microphones, but mint is on the scene too.

Anyway, it looks like soon I’ll be using mint too. Which is cool, except for the fact that we made up several songs for ubuntu already. (One of them even rhymes ubuntu with Srila Prabhupada.)

The same thing happened to me. I was in love with Ubuntu, but found Mint. Funny, I don’t feel like I’m cheating.

I also love how you said, “did I go back to windows with my geeky tail between my legs?”
