Creature from the Black Lagoon … IN 3-D!!!

Last night Ryan, Sarah and I ventured to U-district to a little theater called Grand Illusion. This is my new favorite movie theater ever.

It doesn’t look like much from the outside. Actually, I nearly missed it, until Ryan pointed the way. I think it’s in a house or something. Hard to tell. It was rainy and dark.

But inside it where it charms you. As you pass through two red velvet curtains, you enter a small sloping room filled with soft red velvet theater seats. As Ryan remarked, we’ll never see this much red velvet again unless we’re in Vampire porn (and though I’m only speaking for myself, that’s not likely to happen).

As we walked in the door, they gave us 3-D glasses – red on the right, blue on the left. We were the first ones there. Before show time a few more would wander in, but the small room was far from packed.

Tonights feature: Creature from the Black Lagoon… IN 3-D! I had never seen Creature before. I saw the sequel, Return of the Creature, which starred almost none of the original cast, though did have a very smug John Agar. I saw the MST3K version of it and highly recommend it.

As the movie got under way, the 3-D effects were spectacular. Even though the movie is fairly cheesy, the crowd were outwardly amazed buy them. Some were even reaching out to touch the fish that were swimming in mid-air right before our eyes.

Mostly, we were all having fun. We’d laugh at the dated, 50’s words or dress. Most laughed at the incredibly silly (for these times) monster. We even threw out a riff or two! What a great flick. It’s ripe for the riffing.

This theater is great. I was afraid they’d be playing just shitty arthouse films you hear about on NPR (gag). But no! They play the classics! Now, they can’t play horror flicks all year, but next week is The Reanimator! In two weeks is Harvey, starring Jimmy Stewart. Near Christmas, they’re playing It’s a Wonderful Life!

I have a feeling that I’ll be here quite a bit.

John Agar is the undervalued element in all of the creature film genre. He did Westerns too.

I wonder if he was that smug in real life.

It says that it was a dentist’s office on their website.

I saw that too. Weird. Much better. Dentists bring only pain.

I really want to go to It’s a Wonderful Life.
And I want to make a vampire porn. I can’t decide if I want to call it, “Suck It” or “Capes and Cocks” though…maybe “Nosfer-Hot-u”

“Vlad the Impaler” works too I guess.

We’ll definitely check out Wonderful Life. And I’m definitely going to see Harvey.

Let’s see… we’ve got “Ejacula,” “Intercourse with a Vampire,” “Busty Vampire Seduction,” “From Lust Till Dawn,” “The Sexy Adventures of Van Helsing,” “Muffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Buffy the Vampire Layer,” (I’m waiting for the crossover, “Muffy the Vampire Layer”…) and last, but not least “The Tranny-Sylvanians.”

All of these are real titles. Let’s get to work.

Tranny-sylvanians was on roger ebert’s must see life list.

I should have thought of Ejacula.
