Good-bye, Soy Pasta! And hello Vegan Ramen!

A few weeks ago, I learned the sad truth that Nutrition Kitchen, makers of Whole Soybean Pasta (in green, black and yellow), went out of business. That’s a real shame since their pasta was my favorite.

It had this thick, almost TVP, texture to it. The taste was almost a bit sweet (though not too sweet, of course). When I make sauce, I sometimes will throw a bit of sugar into it. I didn’t have to when I used the Soybean Pasta.

Today I used my last box of it. Probably the last box I’ll ever have. It was a sad last meal.

Yeah, there are a few other makers of soy pasta, but they look very processed and are expensive. Nutrition Kitchen’s looked very “raw” and wasn’t too highly priced.

It would be nice if some other company would take over the production of the product. So far, there seem to be no takers.

This reminds me of when the South Korean company (Nong Shim) that made the Shin Ramyun that I liked suddenly started putting “beef extract” in the spices. Luckily, I have found a very close alternative from Japan.

Soken’s Spicy Dragon Ramen (Szechuan Style) is vegan and MSG-free. The taste is nearly like the Shin Ramyun I used to eat. The difference is that the Spicy Dragon Ramen isn’t really spicy. Adding some cayenne brings it really close to it. I found this at Madison Market in Seattle, but have never seen it anywhere else.

On their website, Soken declares that this flavor has been “renewed!” That means that they discontinued it, only to realize how incredibly dumb of an idea that was.

That’s the news from today.

More on the new apartment, which is pretty much finished, tomorrow.
