Week-long Civil War Scooter Ride

As I mentioned yesterday, I’ll be riding for about a week (maybe a little longer, depending) through Maryland and Virginia, visiting a bunch of Civil War sites.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m sort of a Civil War buff. I’ll be moving to the west coast in about a month and sadly leaving all of that behind. This is my little farewell tour.

My first stop will be Antietam, which I wrote about yesterday. There are a few places and tours I’d like to check out. If time permits, I may even get over to Harpers Ferry. There are several small battlefields in the Antietam area that I’ll also be hitting.

Then, I cruise on down to Lexington, hitting several battlefields along the way (Cedar Creek, McDowell, New Market, etc). I’ll be staying with my friend Olivia’s mom (and Olivia) and seeing some sites around Lexington. I’ll be there for two nights.

Next stop is Petersburg with a ride through Appomattox, the site of Lee’s surrender to Grant. I’ll be camping at Pocahontas State Park for two nights, taking in the sites around Richmond and the Seven Days Battles as well.

From there, it’s north to the Wilderness battlefields of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, etc. After two days and nights of exploring, I’ll head up to Manassas, the first large battle of the Civil War.

And that’s pretty much it. There will be a LOT of picture, a whirlwind of history and hopefully no more breakdowns!

Camping will be chilly, but hopefully bearable. And hopefully the weather holds up.

I leave on Monday, Sept 22. I should return Monday the 29th. Eight days, seven nights of geeked out history. I’m all for it. I wish I could spend more time though. After this trip, I almost immediately head to Rati and Dwija’s from Oct 1 to the 5th.

The Civil War trip will be documented mostly in pictures. There are some places where I won’t have WiFi and after such a long day, it’s doubtful that I’ll want to type a bunch of stuff that pretty much only I care about. Instead – lots of pictures.

I’m really excited to get back on the road, if only for a week. It’ll probably only be 2000ish miles, if that. All I have to do is pack and move on out. I leave Monday morning and should be in Antietam by 11am.

For a pretty ridiculously large map of my travels, click here. It’s a little over 1MB.

Are you going to visit Fredericksburg? I visited Evan down there a few times and we went to the civil war sites. Its a really neat town.

Yep, I’m definitely plan on it. There’s not much left of it, but I’ll see what I can.
