Jerry’s Dead!

Jerry Reed died yesterday at 71. Most of you reading this probably don’t know who he was, and I admit, I hadn’t heard many of his songs.

The one I heard most while I was growing up was “East Bound and Down” which was the theme song to Smokey and the Bandit (Jerry played Snowman in that movie).

He had a bunch of really popular songs in the late 70’s, early 80’s country music scene and I vaguely remember seeing him on HeeHaw when I was a kid. One song that I remembered was “She Got The Goldmine (I Got the Shaft).” And maybe.. just maybe that formed my views on marriage…

The Jerry Reed thing has me at a loss for words. Why does Johnny Cash get to be the “hero” and Jerry Reed forgotten? It plagues me. If you want to brush up on his catalogue, I recommend: Georgia Sunshine, Jerry Reed Explores Guitar Country (which also has Chet Akins on it or perhaps I’m confusing it with Georgia Sunshine) and my favorite: Alabama Wild Man with covers of BOTH Last Train To Clarksville AND House of The Rising Sun. But let us not forget Cletus, The Snowman, and his loyal Fred. Not to mention his cameo on an episode of the Scooby Doo cartoon. The Scoobys go to Nashville and investigate a ghost at the Grand Ole Opry and Jerry Reed himself is there.

Well Johnny was definitely darker than Jerry. Couple that with Rick Rueben and you’ve got an instant seller. Johnny was also an institution. Jerry was just a pretty big country and movie star.

I remember that Scooby Doo episode! Holy crap. Johnny never did one! Clearly, Jerry is on par with the Harlem Globetrotter and Tim Conway!

And lets not forget Don Knotts and I think even Don Adams of Get Smart acclaim had a Scooby Doo episode.

You’re right, I’m pretty sure the two Dons were involved (hehe).

The special guest episodes of Scooby Doo were from a second incarnation of the series. They were hour-long episodes.

The third incarnation gave us Scrappy Doo. Very very bad.
