Classic ISKCON Tapes #13 – Hare Krishna Kirtans – Acyutananda Swami – 1975

Howdy folks! Hare Krishna to you and yours!

I bet you’re all excited because today’s selection is Acyutananda Swami, huh? Well, while Acyutananda beats Hamsadutta any given day, this just isn’t all that great.

KT-13 – Hare Krishna Kirtans – Acyutananda Swami – 1975

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s just not. The first song, Damodarastaka, for example, is horrendous. It’s like he’s trying to sing in one meter and the mrdanga is trying to play in another. No idea how or why they tried this, let alone released this.

The second song isn’t too much better, but the rest of the tape is fairly easy on the ears.

One of the overall problems is that every song sounds exactly the same. These were clearly all done in one take during the same session. That is, with exception of tracks 7 and 12.

All that said, I still think it’s better than a lot of what was released around this time. Check it out and judge for yourself.

1) Sri Damodarastaka
2) Gopinatha
3) Srita Kamale
4) Nitaipadokamala
5) Sri Krsna
6) Sakhi-vrnde Vijnapti
7) Sri Prabhupada Mahima
8) Sri Radhika-stava
9) Yosomati Nandana
10) Hare Krsna
11) Govinda Hari
12) Srita-Kamala

Hari bol!
Seems I missed out those precarious details – being too busy selling on the streets, what happened behind the screen. Just found this:

“There are so many hundreds of examples of Srila Prabhupada chanting on MP3 and other formats…..WHAT EXCUSE CAN A “SO-CALLED” DISCIPLE HAVE TO IGNORE SUCH AS SPIRITUAL MASTER AS HE, AND THEN “GUTTER DIVE” FOR “WORLD MUSIC STYLE COMMERCIAL PERFORMERS SUCH AS “KRISHNA DAS” (From the former LSD ‘guru” Richard Alpert aka Baba Ram Dass”) simply because we lack the spiritual vision to hear from the Authorized Source?…And what good will it do us to copy such Sahajihas as Achyutananda Swami who literally DESTROYED the appetite for SP’s Disciples to chant as He did, by telling them that SP had not given the the “REAL” Bengali melodies!..(As though Srila Prabhupada himself were not a genuine “Bengali” or from a prominent family of Vaishnava devotees Himself!….And so they followed this disobedient neophyte who refused to give up the association with Srila Prabhupada’s SWORN ENEMY…Madhava Maharaja, and helped him complete his “revenge” on Srila Prabhupada by emulating him,….not their own Spiritual Master!…So the result has been ANTI ISKCON KIRTANS firmly in place in our Iskcon temples since 1971 or 1972, and still they dominate and pollute the atmosphere of our daily worship!”

Says, keep off from those original tapes? In case Achyutananda did really such weird things to cause Prabhupada feel terribly offended, better not dig things up?

I just came across this post and the quote about not listening to ’such Sahajiyas’ as Acyutananda Swami. Well, if anything, Acyutananda’s singing only increases whatever spark of love and understanding of Sri Krishna that I have. His recording of Songs of the Vaisnava Acaryas was one of my first loves when I first came in contact with Krishna consciousness at the age of 17 (back in early 1990). Listening to him was part of my sadhana. I certainly do not feel offended or tainted when I hear the bhajans he sings. In fact, when I listen to him, I feel only striving to love Srila Prabhupada and Sri Krishna more and more. Pollute? Hardly. No, I feel his singing (and Prabhupada’s of course!!!) actually helps me transcend my already-polluted mind and heart. It’s obvious that when he sang them he was singing them with love in his heart for guru and sastra and Krishna so I see nothing wrong with listening to him!

Sorry, forgot to mention that when I tried to download the tape above, I ran into a problem. Instead of going to your divshare page and automatically downloading, I was led to a page full of code. It kept running but never downloaded anything. This has happened on a few of your download pages recently. Have I been the only one? Not sure how to fix it. I used to be able to download from your page no problem. argh. Thanks!
