Rest well, Vampira

I learned yesterday that Maila Nurmi, best known for her portrayal of Vampira (who Elvira blatantly ripped off), passed away a few days ago.

In the early morning hours of January 10th, 2008, while sleeping peacefully, Maila Nurmi suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away. Maila had recently turned 86 and was in seemingly good health and spirits.

Funeral arrangements are pending due to a search for relatives, but a memorial service will be held in Los Angeles in the near future. …

She was best known for her part in Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space, but also hosted The Vampira Show on KABC in LA. The show, aired only locally, showed horror movies and Vampira would introduce them. Sort of like Elvira would do years later (wearing basically the same outfit, updated and trashy for the 80’s).

Maila loved the Vampira character and didn’t try to cash in on it (allowing marketing of it to very few items). It’s sad that she’s gone, but at least she had a good and seemingly very clean life.
