Autonomie Project: Shoes for you!

Ever since Converse sold to Nike and they moved the factories to sweatshops across the pond, I’ve been looking for similar shoes. A few years ago, I found No Sweat Apparel. Great company and all union too. Their shoes are $45ish and I’ve had a couple, really digging them. They look pretty much exactly like Chucks (AllStars).

But I recently found another company.

From their MySpace page:

Autonomie Project is a new Fair Trade fashion company offering sweatshop-free & eco-friendly footwear, clothing and accessories. We work exclusively with small, independent worker-owned cooperatives and Fair Trade certified facilities located in rural and developing areas of the world.

We assist our workers with the development and marketing of their products so that they may prosper and lead sustainable lifestyles. By introducing them to US consumers like you, we can empower these disadvantaged workers to become thriving participants in a reconfigured global marketplace.

Their shoes are a bit more expensive, but they’re made in two factories in Argentina and Haiti, both owned by the workers.

And check out the shoes!

And concerned about the conditions of the factory? Don’t be.

I’ve not actually ordered the shoes just yet, but I’m definitely planning on it.

On the surface it seems better than Adbuster’s shoes. How much are they?

They’re around $52ish. Not bad, I guess.

Not too bad. Not as expensive as a pair of Reebok Pumps. I just have a East Coast Vs West Coast feud with Adbusters. I’d like to videotape me pooping on their heads in a slow motion montage set to REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You”. I really dig that they have pictures up. And Kathy Lee Gifford is nowhere in sight:)

I like them. I wish they had more colors though.

Me too. Same with No Sweat shoes. More colors, however, would drive the price up a bit, which would be a shame. Still… would be nice.

Nice find! I think these are probably more expensive because they’re eco-friendly too. Organic cotton and FSC-certified rubber would easily drive up the price from a conventional shoe. As far as I can tell, No Sweat’s aren’t green in any way.
