Autonomie Project: Shoes for you!

Ever since Converse sold to Nike and they moved the factories to sweatshops across the pond, I’ve been looking for similar shoes. A few years ago, I found No Sweat Apparel. Great company and all union too. Their shoes are $45ish and I’ve had a couple, really digging them. They look pretty much exactly like Chucks (AllStars).

But I recently found another company.

From their MySpace page:

Autonomie Project is a new Fair Trade fashion company offering sweatshop-free & eco-friendly footwear, clothing and accessories. We work exclusively with small, independent worker-owned cooperatives and Fair Trade certified facilities located in rural and developing areas of the world.

We assist our workers with the development and marketing of their products so that they may prosper and lead sustainable lifestyles. By introducing them to US consumers like you, we can empower these disadvantaged workers to become thriving participants in a reconfigured global marketplace.

Their shoes are a bit more expensive, but they’re made in two factories in Argentina and Haiti, both owned by the workers.

And check out the shoes!

And concerned about the conditions of the factory? Don’t be.

I’ve not actually ordered the shoes just yet, but I’m definitely planning on it.
