West Coast – Day Seven – Lake Bed and Hot Heat

See, Molly has to be at work at 6am. Generally, Mandy and I sleep in till 9ish and then get up and talk. But today we didn’t talk. Well, not that we didn’t talk at ALL, we didn’t just sit around talking. We got up and did stuff!

We went to Jamba Juice and got smoothies and then she took me to a really great record store where I bought a Proclaimers 10″, an XTC 7″ and … shit, I can’t remember. Something on 12″. Anyway, I was thrilled.

We got home and went to a used bookstore near Molly’s and she bought a couple of books. She’s a reader. I’m really not.

After arriving at Molly’s, there was a knock on the door. Molly roommate, Eric, answered it. Glory! It was my little computer scratching at the door to be let back into my life! Aww, little green friend, how can I refuse?

Molly got home around three and we headed out to this dry part of Salt Lake. I had a bunch of fun.

We took pictures in this old building …

And of an old trolley…

We then walked nearly a mile out and back across this dry lake bed to get to the water. But no. This is why people die in the desert. Things appear to be much closer than they actually are.

The girls tried different ideas on how to keep cool…

But eventually, the heat drove them insane…

Mandy took off her pants, while Molly reverted to singing some messed up little sea chantey while wearing Mandy’s pants on her head. I felt like I was going to pass out, but didn’t say anything. I thought they might kill and eat me. See, this wasn’t MY idea, but they were doing it because of me.

After that wackiness, we went to Mandy’s dad’s house, met her dad and her boyfriend Earl. Mandy’s cats made Mandy’s peepers all puffy and so we had to scram, bringing Mr. Earl with us.

Earl is really really cool. Definitely the most awesome guy in SLC. We dropped a puffy-eyed Molly off at her house and went to Long Life for a quick bite of vegan Chinese goodness.

We found our way back to Molly’s and milled about for a spell. Molly was still not feeling so hot, so she took a nap while Earl, Mandy and I walked to Wild Oats to get a cookie for Mandy. We ate it in front of the Sprauge Library and the big Sugar Beet statue that everyone thinks is a radish.

This is a sugar beet:

And this is a radish:

And this is who I’m voting for in ’08:

Mandy and Earl are a ridiculously cute couple. Not like over-cute and annoying. It’s just great seeing a healthy little relationship. What the hell are those, anyway?

We got back to Molly’s place, Mandy and Earl left and Molly and I stayed up and talked. Our last late night talk until our paths meet again. It was sad. This trip was hard. There’s a lot that has been unmentioned. But I think that it’s ok. Before our talk last night, I wouldn’t have said that. But now, I really do think that it’s ok. We talked a few things out – just discussion. Nothing that was even a contention. Just analysis.

This Molly girl wants so many things. Wants to be so many places. She needs to start in on that plan. She’s happy, I think. But she could be a lot happier and she knows it and is excited about it. She just has to make it happen.

I’m going to miss the crap out of Molly and Mandy. The way this week was going earlier on, I’m honestly surprised that I’m saying this. But it’s true. I really will. I bet I’ll even miss finding Molly’s hair everywhere. It may take some time, but I will. :)

Ok, this is my last post from Salt Lake City. Today’s plans are simple. Get me some food and get me to the train station at 10pmish. After that, it’s a 20 hour train ride to Berkeley. Internet connection may or may not be sparse from now till Seattle. I’ll do my best to post.

California, here I come!
